Is the Streamlight TLR-1 and TLR-1 hl the same size?
The TLR1 is the same size and shape as the TLR1 HL. So that would pretty much be the only choice. The Nightstick pistol light is similar but it’s about the same price anyway.

Which tlr-1/tlr-3?
For a compact pistol I’d go with the TLR-3. For a full-size or long-slide pistol, I’d go with the TLR-1. Attached to my home defense pistol in seconds using only a quarter to tighten securely. Worried that the HL would be too bright – nope – lights up a room, garage, or yard section just as would be needed for a safe search and scan.
Will I be disappointed with the TLR-1 HL?
You won’t be disappointed with the TLR-1 HL. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: if you get this light, take minute and You Tube the directions on opening the battery compartment. The printed directions suck and if you don’t push the lever all the way back (to ‘pop’ the compartment open) you can get very frustrated trying to get it open (short of breaking it).
