Both are leavening agents which are used to help baked goods rise for light and fluffy results. Baking soda = bicarbonate of soda. When mixed with an acidic liquid it is activated and releases carbon dioxide. Baking powder = baking soda + a dry acid (like cream of tartar) + an inert stabilizer (like cornstarch).
